News Team Henselite Australian Indoor Crowns for Rebecca Van Asch and David Ferguson
September 4, 2017

Team Henselite's Rebecca Van Asch and David Ferguson are the 2017 Australian Indoor Singles Champions after winning the women's and men's titles at Tweed Heads Bowls Club last week.

David Ferguson was the underdog going into the final against Henselite team-mate, Jeremy Henry.  Jeremy has stamped his authority on the event in recent years, winning the previous 2 consecutive titles and was a three-time winner overall.

Engadine's David Ferguson held his nerve in the final, despite dropping the first set, 6-11.  He claimed the next set, 8-6 before taking control of the tie-break to win that 4-2 with his Dreamline XGs.

Rebecca Van Asch had earlier made history by becoming the first Tasmanian to hold aloft the trophy.

"My goal this year was to try and at least make the semi-finals of the event. I was runner up in last year's event though so deep down I was really wanting to go one better this year and make up for that disappointment from last year," she said.

"I’ve made semi-finals and finals of this event before but I haven’t been able to crack it, so it was awesome this year to finally take out the title. Tassie have had some great results at the indoors over the years so it was amazing to finally get the win this year. I’m a fiercely patriotic Tasmanian and it is always my goal to represent Tasmania as best I can so it is extra special to get these wins for my state as well as on a personal level."

Rebecca didn't have it all her own way throughout the event however, and had a few scares along the way. "I went to a few tie-breakers this year and my semi-final match against Ellen Ryan was just as tough as the final. But I think sometimes having a tough run in is a good thing and keeps you really on your toes. I went through in straight sets last year and then lost the final on the last end of the tie-break in a very similar fashion to how I won this year, so maybe it was a good omen!

Rebecca used her new "Paris" Dreamline XGs in pink and black to win the title. "I love my XGs. It doesn’t matter whether I am on the slower greens in Tassie or quicker greens in New Zealand they always serve me well. And they were fantastic on the carpet this year. They drew beautifully all event and still allowed me to play an aggressive style when I needed to. Both David and I used XGs so I think that says a lot!"

"I have a few events lined up here in Tassie over the next month, before our last Australian Squad selection trial before the Trans-Tasman team and then Commonwealth Games teams are selected. I will be training pretty hard now to try and do everything I can to get selected for those events so fingers crossed!"
